A Level 3 Qualified AAT Bookkeeper is entitled to apply for associate bookkeeping membership and use the designatory letters ‘AATQB’ after their name.

AAT’s bookkeeping membership offers you the opportunity to demonstrate your bookkeeping skills and expertise to employers, colleagues and clients. You’ll gain professional recognition and can even apply to become self-employed and offer bookkeeping services to your own clients (subject to conditions).

The first three units making up the Level 2 Foundation Certificate in Bookkeeping and Level 2 Foundation Certificate in Accounting Software are:

Bookkeeping Transactions (BTRN)

This unit introduces you to double entry bookkeeping, the different types of accounts and records a business keeps and how to enter transactions into the accounts.

Bookkeeping Controls (BKCL)

This unit follows on nicely from Bookkeeping Transactions. You will learn how to identify errors in the accounts and make corrections. You will also learn about the banking system and how to create a full set of accounts up to trial balance.

Using Accounting Software (UACS)

For this unit you will be required to use your knowledge of bookkeeping and double entry to enter a company’s data into a computerised system.

We base this unit on using Sage 50 Professional software. This is the most popular choice in the industry and used extensively by employers and accountancy practices. The fundamentals of data entry are covered within this unit but as this is a work entry level we also offer the Sage 50 Professional courses and certificate as an inclusive option. This has proven to be our most popular choice over the years as it provides more employment opportunities.

The 3 units covering Level 3 are:-

Advanced Bookkeeping (AVBK)

This unit follows on from trial balance stage at level 2. You will learn how to prepare accounts from partial information, correction of errors and how to produce an Extended Trial Balance in preparation of preparing financial statements.

Final Accounts Preparation (FAPR)

You will learn how to prepare financial accounts (statement of profit and loss and statement of financial position) for sole traders and partnerships.

Indirect Tax (IDRX)

This unit covers the treatment of VAT, VAT thresholds, when to register for VAT, how to complete a VAT return and all you need to know about VAT for the small to medium business.

Professional ethics are covered within all of the above units.

Our specialist department will provide you with feedback advice and support, plus any additional lessons and tests you may need prior to taking an assessment.

Arranging an assessment:

A major advantage with our home study courses is the flexibility for taking assessments. There are over 200 external assessment venues available in the UK. To find your nearest venue go to https://www.aat.org.uk/assessment/assessment-venue/search

Just enter your postcode and the distance in miles you are willing to travel and hit Submit. You will see the venues in order starting with the nearest to you.

So when the time comes to take an assessment you can choose from the list and contact them to arrange a suitable time and date.

Q: What is the average completion time for these courses?

A: Much depends on how easily you adapt or if you have any previous knowledge or experience. Our statistics show that our students take anything from 6 months to 24 months to complete a Level 2 and 3 combined course.
