Mikael Weltman – From Care Worker to Certified Bookkeeper
How Mikael is looking to change his career with Training Link and ICB
After researching opportunities where he could earn remotely and flexibly around current commitments, Mikael took a leap of faith.
Q: What is your background and why did you decide to become an ICB certified bookkeeper?
A: For the past 15 years I have been working in the care industry, so I had no background at all in accounting or finance. This was certainly a big jump to become a certified bookkeeper. However, I wanted to increase my income by doing something where I could work remotely and flexibly around my current work and family life. I have 7 children which means I must be flexible to balance work and family commitments.
Q: How did you find the learning experience with Training Link?
A: I had a couple of friends who had started their own bookkeeping business and one of them recommended ICB and Training Link.
I was a bit apprehensive as this would be a total career change, so I started with the free trial module. I realised bookkeeping was actually fun and interesting and decided to enrol to become certified. The more I studied, the more I enjoyed it and sometimes it was actually hard to put the books down!
I found the course materials very clear and easy to follow, and the tutors were very helpful and supportive. I also liked the online learning platform where I could access the videos, quizzes, and mock exams.
Q: How long did it take you to complete the certification and what are your plans for the future?
A: I completed level 2 and level 3 in just over a year, passing all of my exams at the first sitting.
The plan is to open my own full time bookkeeping business, but I am starting small as I have limited past experience. I have just received my first client, a local charity, and I am really excited to do their accounts. I hope to grow my client base gradually and provide quality bookkeeping services to small and medium-sized businesses. I also want to keep learning and updating my skills as a bookkeeper.
