Which awarding body is right for you

Do you want to become a freelance bookkeeper? Or are you looking for an employed role?

As a general rule, we’d recommend the Institute of Certified Bookkeepers (ICB) for freelancers, and we’d suggest the Association of Accounting Technicians (AAT) route for those looking for an employed role.

AAT or ICB Bookkeeping – A quick overview

The AAT Level 2 Bookkeeping course consists of just two units and should take around 6 months to complete.

  • Introduction to Bookkeeping
  • Principles of Bookkeeping Controls

AAT does not set any formal entry requirements for their Level 2 qualification but a good understanding of English is essential.

The ICB Level 2 course consists of three units and three online exams. It should take up to 12 months to complete.

There are five topics covered.

  • Underpinning Knowledge
  • Preparation of Business Documents
  • Accounting for VAT
  • Entering Transactions
  • Reconciliation and Reporting

There are no prerequisites, but you need to have basic numerical skills and a good understanding of the English language.
