Do you want to become a freelance bookkeeper? Or are you looking for an employed role?
As a general rule, we’d recommend the Institute of Certified Bookkeepers (ICB) for freelancers, and we’d suggest the Association of Accounting Technicians (AAT) route for those looking for an employed role.
AAT or ICB Bookkeeping – A quick overview
The AAT Level 3 Bookkeeping course consists of just two units and should take around 6-9 months to complete.

AAT does not set any formal entry requirements for their Level 3 qualification but advises that completion of the previous level or other prior attainment in the subject is advantageous.

The ICB Level 3 course consists of six topics and five assessments. It should take up to 12 months to complete.
- Underpinning Knowledge
- Reconciliation of accounts and correction of errors
- Reconciliation of and production of a VAT Return
- Calculation and posting of adjustments to the accounts
- Production of draft final accounts for internal management purposes
- Interpretation of financial statements
To study the ICB Level 3 Certificate in Bookkeeping and Accounts you will need to have achieved the Level 2 Certificate or gained an equivalent from another awarding body.
