How Nathan balanced his AAT studies alongside his full-time job at a family-run haulage business
Nathan embarked on his AAT qualifications in December 2021, following his departure from school at 17 after completing his GCSEs and a year of a level 3 qualification.
A New Direction
His tenure at a family-run haulage and warehousing business in Shropshire, spanning approximately four years, provided him with diverse departmental experiences. It was his foray into the accounts department that ignited his interest in the field, propelling him to pursue further knowledge and skills necessary for this sector and to begin his AAT journey.
Building a Foundation
The motivation to delve into accountancy training stemmed from Nathan’s hands-on experience in the accounts department. He recognised the international recognition and professional status conferred by AAT qualifications, which he believed would not only enhance his career but also be valued by his current and future employers. Moreover, AAT qualifications offered him a pathway to advanced accountancy qualifications, aligning with his ambition.
As Nathan now approaches the completion of his level 4 studies (which he started in December 2021), all whilst continuing to work full-time, he reflects:
“My immediate goal was to finish level 4 while upholding the work ethic that has contributed to my success up to now. Going forward, my long-term goal and aspiration is to set up my own practice to provide accountancy support and services to local businesses.”
The AAT courses proved to be highly accessible and flexible, accommodating Nathan’s personal needs and full-time job commitments. The flexibility that his course offered him was a significant advantage. The personalised support from his personal tutor at Training Link and the resources provided by AAT were invaluable, especially in the absence of a structured classroom environment.
Throughout his AAT journey, Nathan encountered both challenges and triumphs. He learned that perseverance and hard work yield rewards. Balancing work with study required dedication, but the encouragement from Training Link and his employer was instrumental. While high personal expectations sometimes posed challenges, engagement with his tutor helped him navigate these obstacles. The ability to set personal expectations within the course framework made each success more fulfilling.
Aspirations and Achievements
One of Nathan’s notable achievements was being invited by his training provider to join AAT’s Student Advisory Group for level 4. This opportunity allowed him to contribute insights on improving the course for future students, thereby enhancing their learning experience. Beyond acquiring accountancy skills, Nathan’s engagement with AAT courses and practical application of knowledge at work also bolstered his confidence, ambition, organisational abilities, and communication skills. His experience transcended mere attainment of a professional qualification.
