What is the AAT Level 2 Certificate in Bookkeeping?

It's a foundational qualification that develops your practical double-entry bookkeeping skills across two units — Introduction to Bookkeeping, and Principles of Bookkeeping Controls — teaching you to process transactions, use control accounts and journals, and produce a trial balance.

Do I need experience to start Level 2?

No prior experience is required, though having completed Level 1 (or having some basic numeracy confidence) helps. Most students join AAT bookkeeping at Level 2.

How long does it take to complete?

This course carries 80–90 learning hours and can be completed in up to 6 months, with 2 exams to sit. Most students take between 2 and 6 months, and as it's distance learning you set your own pace.

What's the difference between AAT Bookkeeping and AAT Accounting at Level 2?

Bookkeeping focuses specifically on transaction processing and bookkeeping controls, while Accounting covers a broader range of topics including costing and the wider business environment. Bookkeeping is the quicker, more specialised route if your goal is AATQB status. But, since the AAT Level 2 Certificate in Accounting comprises two of the units featured in the Level 2 Bookkeeping qualification, you can do the remaining two units and work towards the accounting pathway instead.

What does Level 2 qualify me to do?

Skills developed on this qualification can lead to roles such as Clerical Assistant, Trainee Bookkeeper, Accounts Clerk, Finance Assistant, or Accounts Administrator, and you'll be ready to progress to Level 3.
