Alastair’s Inspiring AAT Learning Journey with Training Link

We sat down with one of our successful AAT students to learn about their journey, from choosing distance learning to landing their dream finance role.

Here’s what Alastair had to say:

Q: Why Distance Learning, and Why Training Link?

“I chose distance learning as I was furloughed during the lockdown period in March 2020 and decided to study while not working to change my career path. I reviewed various training providers before purchasing my Level 2 AAT course. I eventually chose Training Link due to the extensive learning add-ons that are given within the course, attractive and easy to use layout of the portal, also the great value for money compared with other providers!”

Q: Which Course Proved Most Valuable?

“I would have to choose the Level 4 AAT course. It’s a great course to test your skills and knowledge after completing Level 2 & 3. All the subjects involved in the mandatory units are great for building both a financial and management accounting aspect. I personally chose the optional units of ‘Cash and Financial Management’ and ‘Business Tax’ as these modules provide key information to be used in the workplace that the other modules only briefly touch on.”

Q: How Relevant Has the Course Been to Your Job Role?

“I studied Level 2 while I was furloughed in lockdown, so initially didn’t have a chance to apply myself and the knowledge I learnt until lockdown ended, which then I found myself an ‘Accounts Assistant’ role. When I started this role I started to apply all the bookkeeping processes, ethical principles and elements of costing that I studied in Level 2. I then started studying Level 3 and applied the knowledge that I was learning at the same time as working, which is key in developing your skills. There are 2 aspects of learning, one is via studying and testing yourself with exams, the other is applying in the real-life workplace, and the combination of both really does propel your learning. After 1 year in the business and passing my Level 3 AAT I was promoted to ‘Assistant Accountant’. I kept taking on more jobs and tasks so that I could gain a wider knowledge and understanding of all aspects of the business and accounting from different levels. I have now transitioned into a Finance Business Partner role which is more focused on the budgeting, forecasting and partnering with operations side of a business to achieve set goals, all of which AAT has prepared me with a strong foundation.”

Q: What Challenges Did You Face, and What Were Your Triumphs?

“I would say my biggest challenge over my whole AAT journey was starting to study again after years away from education. Initially it was difficult to sit down and get my mind in a study zone, however, after reading the material numerous times and the desire to understand I eventually got myself in the swing of it. I would say that if you are determined to become a finance professional there is nothing stopping you if you put the time, effort and proper focus into studies and understanding. In my experience the best way of studying and keeping your mind fresh and receptive to the material is frequent short periods of study.”

“The biggest triumph would be overcoming the initial doubt I had of myself at the start of my studies.”

Q: How Have the Additional Skills You Gained Helped You?

“The additional skills I’ve learnt aid me every day in my work. I have gained valuable skills and experiences in the form of being able to fluently read financial statements, carry out presentations, and explain variances accurately. Also, probably my most favourite will be the skill of sitting exams and being able to work under pressure in a certain time frame; this is priceless.”
