AAT was established in 1980 and is the world’s leading professional body for accounting technicians with over 130,000 members.

AAT’s qualifications are internationally-recognised, OfQual regulated, and the syllabus has been developed after feedback from businesses so students develop real-world skills which improve their employability. They award 80% of all vocational qualifications in accounting.

Organisations such as Sainsbury’s, P&G, Morgan Stanley, the Ministry of Defence and many more continue to hire AAT qualified members for their knowledge, skills, and diligence.

Studying for an AAT qualification is a much more cost-effective option for school-leavers. It offers the promise of a career in a well-respected profession and doesn’t lead to the eye-watering levels of debt associated with a typical university education.

80% of AAT members that have completed an AAT accounting qualification agree that it has increased their earning potential.*

You can complete this course in 24 months or less.

Unlike the previous Level 4 qualification, every unit on the L4PAT is mandatory — there are no optional units to choose between. All students complete the same five units:

Financial Accounting (FNAC) — Worth 25% of the overall grade

Covers drafting the financial statements of single limited companies, and how to draft consolidated financial statements for groups of companies. You will become proficient in international accounting standards and apply them when drafting statutory financial statements, and learn how to interpret financial statements using ratio analysis.

  • Understand the reporting frameworks that underpin financial reporting
  • Draft statutory financial statements for limited companies
  • Draft consolidated financial statements
  • Interpret financial statements using ratio analysis

Management Accounting (MNAC) — Worth 25% of the overall grade

Focuses on the three basic areas of management accounting: planning, control and decision-making. You will understand the budgetary process, construct budgets, identify and report on areas of success and concern, and gain the skills to critically evaluate organisational performance and manage liquidity.

  • Understand and implement the organisational planning process
  • Use internal processes to enhance operational control
  • Use techniques to aid short-term and long-term decision making
  • Analyse and report on business performance, including cash and liquidity management

Audit and Internal Controls (ATIC) — Worth 15% of the overall grade

Combines internal accounting controls with the audit process into a single unit. All organisations must guard against fraud through good control systems, and this unit shows you how to evaluate internal controls and recommend improvements, alongside gaining an understanding of the audit process from planning and risk assessment through to the completion and production of the audit report.

  • Evaluate an organisation’s accounting systems and internal controls
  • Understand fraud risk and the impact of technology on accounting systems
  • Understand the audit and assurance framework and the importance of professional ethics
  • Evaluate the planning process for audit and assurance, and procedures for obtaining evidence
  • Review and report findings

Principles of Taxation (PTAX) — Worth 15% of the overall grade

Merges personal and business tax into one comprehensive unit. You will gain essential knowledge of income tax, National Insurance, Capital Gains Tax and Corporation Tax, and understand how to compute these taxes for individuals, sole traders, partnerships and limited companies.

Understand principles and rules that underpin the UK tax system
Calculate income tax and National Insurance contributions (NICs) payable
Calculate Capital Gains Tax payable
Prepare Corporation Tax computations for limited companies
Understand tax planning opportunities and administrative requirements

Advanced Business Awareness (AVBA) — Worth 20% of the overall grade

A completely new unit for L4PAT, with no Q2022 equivalent. Covers business strategy, data analytics, communication, sustainability and professional ethics — the wider commercial and digital skills employers expect from a professional accounting technician, alongside the technical content in the other four units.

  • Understand business strategy and the wider commercial environment
  • Use data analytics to interpret, protect and act on information
  • Apply sustainability principles and professional ethics in a business context
  • Communicate professional information clearly and appropriately

Assessments are being rolled out in stages: FNAC and MNAC go live 1 September 2026, ATIC and AVBA go live 1 October 2026, and PTAX goes live 25 January 2027 (aligned with the Finance Act 2026 cycle). Read more about the rollout timeline »

Q: What is the L4PAT and how is it different from the old Level 4?

The Level 4 Diploma for Professional Accounting Technicians (L4PAT) is AAT’s updated Level 4 qualification, replacing the Level 4 Diploma in Professional Accounting from 1 September 2026. The biggest change is that all five units are now mandatory — there are no optional units to choose between — and a brand new Advanced Business Awareness unit has been added. All assessments are also now 100% computer marked.

Q: Can I still register for the old Q2022 Level 4?

Yes, you can register for the Q2022 Level 4 Diploma in Professional Accounting up until 31 August 2026. After that date, all new registrations will be for the L4PAT qualification.

Q: Can I register with AAT for the new L4PAT now?

Not yet. AAT registrations for the L4PAT qualification only open from 1 September 2026. If you register with AAT before that date, you’ll be registered on the current Q2022 Level 4 Diploma in Professional Accounting rather than the new L4PAT — the two are separate registrations, and AAT can’t simply swap you over afterwards.

If you want to start on L4PAT specifically, hold off registering with AAT until 1 September 2026 or later. You can still get started with Training Link and your study materials in advance — just don’t submit your AAT registration until the date has passed.

Q: I’m already studying Q2022 — do I need to switch?

If you registered for the Q2022 Level 4 Diploma in Professional Accounting before 31 August 2026, no — you can continue your studies and sit exams until 31 July 2028. Completing your current qualification is usually the simplest route.

If you haven’t registered yet, this doesn’t apply to you: 31 August 2026 is the final date for new Q2022 registrations, so from 1 September 2026 all new students register on the new L4PAT qualification instead.

If you’re on Q2022 and can’t finish in time, you can transfer your results across to L4PAT for a £50 fee — see our full guide for details.

Q: Is registration included?

You can choose to include your AAT registration by checking the box before you add the course to your shopping basket.

Q: Are assessment fees (exams) included?

No. You will need to book your own exams at an approved AAT assessment centre of your choice. You would pay the test centre directly at the time of booking.

Q: What is the average completion time for these courses?

There are five units on this course.

Our students take anything from 9 months to 18 months to complete this Level 4 course. As this is distance learning you create your own schedule- you can fast-track your studies if you want, but if you need to take longer that’s OK too.

All units are assessed by a Computer Based Assessment (CBA), and all five L4PAT assessments are 100% computer marked, with results typically available within 24 hours once AAT has completed its initial quality assurance period.

Assessments are being rolled out in stages as the new syllabus launches: FNAC and MNAC from 1 September 2026, ATIC and AVBA from 1 October 2026, and PTAX from 25 January 2027.

You have two flexible options for sitting these exams:

Option 1: External Assessment Centre (In-Person) You can complete your assessment at an approved AAT assessment centre of your choice.

  • Arranging an Assessment: There are over 200 external assessment venues available in the UK. To find your nearest venue, go to AAT’s Assessment Venue Search.
  • Booking: When the time comes to take an assessment, you can choose from the list and contact them directly to arrange a suitable time and date.
  • Fees: Assessment fees are payable directly to the centre/venue and may incur an administration fee.

Option 2: Remote Invigilation (Online) For maximum flexibility, you have the option to sit your exams online via remote invigilation, offered from day one of the new syllabus. This allows you to complete your assessment wherever you are, without travelling to a centre.

  • Booking: You can book your remote invigilated exam directly with us using our online booking form: Training Link AAT Exam Booking
  • Fees: All remote invigilation fees are managed directly through this booking process.

Assessment Preparation On our Blended course package, you will encounter a series of online knowledge tests throughout the course. This includes End of Course Tests and Online Exam Simulation Tests (Mock Assessments). Our specialist department will provide you with feedback, advice, and support, plus any additional lessons and tests you may need prior to taking an assessment.

Want more flexibility?

Our tutor support timeframes are deliberately generous and far exceed what most students need.

Most of our students finish well in advance of the course duration. But what happens if you do need a little longer?

This is where our course extension options come into play. We offer one-month, three-month, and six-month extensions so you can feel reassured by knowing that if you do need extra time you have that option.
