Accounting is a profession that lasts a lifetime. There is no successful business, without someone performing the role of an accountant. For as long as 5.6 million businesses exist in the UK, so will the need and demand for accountants.

A Lifetime? Really?

We’re all aware of the impending change our lives face by the reliance on technology. These changes, affect both our professional and personal lives. Many jobs that exist today, may be replaced by computers and robots going forward.

In regards to accountancy though, technology is accelerating the need for accountants to upskill rather than wiping staff out.

If there is a time to become an accountant or to learn accounting skills – the time is now. Here is why!

Reason: There is a growing demand for accountants globally. Among applicants, there is a lack of those who have a strong knowledge of the field and are equipped with future-proof skillsets.

Data analytics, for example, is a skill that is in high demand globally. Accountants who know how to break down data and apply it to business functions are those that bring the most value to companies.

Not what you thought right?

Many think desirable accountants need to be either genius in maths or a lover of tax laws. That couldn’t be further from the truth. Accountancy is a career that is filled with challenges to grow your skillset beyond basic maths. We debunked these myths in a blog article which you can find here

This prejudice has stopped so many capable people from becoming accountants. For example, when it comes to mathematics, basic arithmetic is what most accountants use on a daily basis. As long as you have a calculator then you are pretty much good to go. Software such as Sage or Microsoft Excel, handle the big work when it comes to calculations.

So what do accountants really do?

They work to their strengths across a wide field of careers.

Are you great at handling relationships & want to be self-employed? 🤗 🧑‍💻

Well, that sounds like a successful career in bookkeeping. This highly desired and respected profession is one that many ventures into due to the flexibility it holds. Becoming a self-employed bookkeeper comes with client relationships built to last. You would work closely with clients and businesses to track down their incomings and outgoings, alongside ensuring compliance.

Do you put two and two together when others don’t get it? ➕ ➖ 🔮

Why not look into Financial Planning. Predicting future financial outcomes from data is what companies are struggling to do currently. The demand for data analysts is growing with pace in all industries. Holding data analysis skills in the accounting industry is what many consider to be the golden ticket to a successful career. After all, the skill that got many businesses through the challenging pandemic, was data analysis.  To read more about data analysis in accounting, check out this blog post here.

Do you have an eye for detail? 👀

Forensic Accounting or Tax Detection could be your field. Finding discrepancies in accounts for companies or even court trials could be what you work on day to day. Delivering a new task every day and most of all – a challenge.

As intimidating as job roles such as Forensic accounting sound, these are realistic and achievable professions which many discount themselves from. The beauty of Accounting is once you are qualified, you can follow your passion and enter careers you may never have believed you could achieve!

Being an accountant doesn’t equate to being boxed into one industry or role for life. There is room to grow into new roles, as you grow in experience.

However, many ask do you need a degree to really kick start your career?

Simply, the answer is no. Accounting can be life-changing because there is no requirement to hold a degree for a successful career. AAT’s Level 2, 3 & 4 Accounting courses and ICB’s Bookkeeping courses; are accredited qualifications that provide accountants with a wealth of knowledge. These courses are recognised globally and are seen as the minimum when applying for roles here in the UK.

These courses can be studied at colleges, by yourself, or via distance learning with a training provider like us.

We’re heavy supporters of distance learning, as it enables students to study at their own pace and in their own time. The real game-changer by choosing distance learning is the ability to earn whilst you learn. Once completing AAT’s Level 2, the average accountant earns £21,000. Level 2 on average takes only 10 months to complete. So from the day you purchase your AAT level 2 course, you could be 10-12 months away from having a foot in the accounting door & kickstarting your career. Moreover, AAT Levels 2,3 & 4 can be completed at your own pace. We had one student complete all 3 courses in 1 year

This goes to show, that distance learning is a very attractive option for those considering a career in accounting.
